Our Catholic Life
The values of the Catholic faith permeate the Saint Mary School experience. Religion classes focus on the basics of Catholic doctrine through a study of the Bible, the history of the Catholic Church, liturgy and the sacraments. An appreciation for the Faith is integrated through stories, activities, prayer, discussion, reflection and art.
K-8th grade students attend weekday Mass and preschoolers enjoy age-appropriate faith experiences. Students have opportunities to participate in Mass as readers, cross bearers, altar servers, presenters of gifts and choir members at our weekly liturgies. Students experience other Faith practices such as the Living Rosary, Stations of the Cross, May Crowning, reconciliation and retreats. In these ways students grow to appreciate their faith and to experience the joy of being a Christian.
As a school, we will all focus on one virtue each month. Teachers nominate students in their class, even preschool, who have modeled the virtue over the month and they are recognized at mass and given an award. We also nominate one teacher each month who exemplifies that particular virtue. Examples include Charity for September, Friendship for October and Courtesy for November.
Value and beliefs are put into practice through the service opportunities that are provided. Visits to Senior Nursing Homes, clothing collections for the poor, creation of Blessing Bags for the homeless, writing Thank You Notes to those who serve our country, and visits to Feed My Starving Children are just some of the ways in which students have shown their faith in the past.
